A nationwide manhunt is under way in Zimbabwe for a Bedford-based businessman wanted by British police over the deaths of his wife and two young daughters, after he allegedly fled the UK on a British passport just days before the bodies were discovered.
Bedfordshire Police have named the suspect as Ndodana Mkhanyisi Tshuma, 45, a British citizen of Zimbabwean heritage who is widely known as “Mark.” He is believed to have boarded a flight out of London Heathrow Airport on Saturday, 4 July, two days before officers forced their way into the family’s home in Carnoustie Drive, Great Denham, and found three bodies inside.
Police believe the victims to be Tshuma’s wife, Nothabo Zandile Tshuma, 42, and their daughters Natalie, 15, and Nala, 5, although formal identification had not yet taken place at the time detectives went public with the case.
What Happened
Concerns were raised after the mother and her daughters had not been seen for several days. Officers entered the property on Monday, 6 July, and a murder investigation was launched the following day by the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Major Crime Unit.
Detective Inspector Lee Martin, the senior investigating officer, confirmed that Tshuma left the UK on the Saturday and is now believed to be in Zimbabwe. Police have released CCTV images of him at Heathrow in an effort to trace his movements and appealed directly to him to surrender.
Assistant Chief Constable John Murphy earlier described the case as a deeply distressing incident.
The Zimbabwe Connection
Bedfordshire Police say they are working with the UK’s National Crime Agency to share information with international law enforcement, but as of Thursday no Interpol Red Notice had yet been issued.
Zimbabwe Republic Police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed that local police have not received any formal notification from UK authorities or Interpol regarding Tshuma’s whereabouts, but said the force has “activated all our systems” and is on alert at border points, ready to make an arrest if he is located in the country.
Without a formal Interpol Red Notice or extradition request in place, Zimbabwean police say due process would need to be followed before any arrest could lead to Tshuma being handed over to UK authorities — a legal process that could take time given that Zimbabwe is not among the countries with an extradition treaty with Britain.
Nyathi urged Tshuma to come forward voluntarily, saying this would allow “due process of the law” to take its course based on the allegations from the UK.
Tributes Pour In
The deaths have shaken the Bedford community. Natalie was a Year 10 pupil at Bedford Girls’ School, remembered by her headteacher as talented in dance, music and sport. Nala attended Pilgrims Pre-Prep, where staff described her as a cheerful, curious child who had been part of the school community since she was a baby.
Neighbours in the upmarket Great Denham estate, where the family’s home overlooks a golf course, told reporters they were shaken that such a tragedy could happen in what they considered a safe area. Flowers have been laid outside the property.
In a statement released through police, the family said they were grateful for the messages of support they had received, but were unable to comment further while the investigation continues and were awaiting guidance on funeral arrangements.
What Happens Next
The case highlights the practical hurdles UK authorities face when a suspect flees to a country without a bilateral extradition treaty. Legal experts note that even if Tshuma is located in Zimbabwe, his return to Britain to face charges would likely require diplomatic and legal coordination between the two governments rather than a straightforward handover.
For now, both Bedfordshire Police and the Zimbabwe Republic Police say the search continues, with Zimbabwean authorities maintaining alert status at border posts across the country.
